Vital Pulp Therapy
Deep decay or dental trauma can affect the pulp inside a tooth. In suitable cases, vital pulp therapy aims to preserve pulp tissue that remains alive. Your dentist will assess the tooth before explaining the treatment options that may be considered.
What is dental pulp?
Pulp is the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels inside a tooth. Vital pulp therapy (VPT) aims to create conditions for pulp repair and preservation. Depending on its condition, approaches may include pulp capping or procedures that remove part of the pulp.
How is it different from root canal treatment?
VPT aims to retain living pulp that can be preserved. Root canal treatment removes pulp from the root canals, then cleans, disinfects and fills them. They have different indications. Pain severity alone cannot determine the choice, and VPT cannot replace root canal treatment in every case.
Which teeth can be assessed?
Some teeth affected by decay or trauma may be assessed if pulp suitable for preservation remains. VPT is not limited to permanent teeth with developing roots; selected mature permanent teeth may also be considered. The pulp condition and whether the tooth can be restored properly are central to the decision.
Assessment and treatment
1. Diagnosis:
Review symptoms and history, examine the tooth, and use pulp response tests and X-rays where appropriate.
2. Assess the pulp:
Findings during treatment also help determine whether preservation is suitable.
3. Protect and restore:
Manage affected tissue, place suitable materials and seal the tooth with a restoration.
4. Review:
Monitor symptoms and the tooth’s condition to determine whether further treatment is needed.
